Your rank in the final merit list and your category decide the service you will be offered by DoPT. Every year UPSC gets about 10 lakh applications out of which 7-8 lakh aspirants from all over India appear for the Preliminary Examination. High ability students with professional background of Engineering, Technology, Medicine, Management also compete for this prestigious career. Students from IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, & other world renowned Institutes also aspire to become a Civil Service Officer. Hence the competition is obviously very tough and ruthless. Out of the 7-8 lakh students appearing for Prelims, 10000 (about 1.25%) are selected for Mains. Out of these Ten thousand, 2000 (about 0.25%) get an Interview call and finally about 800 are recommended (0.1%) by UPSC for a post. So it is 1 in 1000 chance of getting selected. Also one has to compete in the first attempt with Seniors who have cleared 1 or all of the Pre-Mains-Interview levels in their earlier attempts and/or are preparing for this exam for 5 to 10 years.
